Mini bird food feeder for sparrows on a balcony

Welcome Birds to Your Terrace This Winter: A Simple Guide to Bird Feeding

Remember waking up to sparrows chirping at the window? In winter, birds have to work harder to find food and water. A little dana-pani on your terrace or balcony can bring them back.

It costs very little, takes two minutes a day, and the first time a bird lands on your feeder, you'll feel it was worth it. Here's how to start. 🐦

Start in 5 simple steps

1

Pick a safe, quiet spot

Hang the feeders on a balcony grill, a terrace railing or a tree branch, about 5 feet high, where cats can't reach. A spot with some shade and a nearby plant or wall for birds to perch on works best. Bonus: choose a place you can see from a window.

2

Give the right food

Kagni (foxtail millet) is a favourite of small birds like sparrows and munias. Fill a little in the morning, just enough for the day, so it stays fresh. Avoid salty, spicy or fried food and bread; they are not good for birds.

3

Don't forget water

Birds need water to drink and bathe even in winter. Fill fresh, clean water every day. It often attracts birds even before the food does.

4

Keep it clean

Wash the water feeder every 2–3 days and throw away any food that gets wet or old. Clean feeders keep birds healthy and coming back.

5

Be patient

Birds take time to trust a new place. It can take a few days to a couple of weeks for the first visitors. Keep the food and water going at the same spot, and once they find it, they will come daily.

🌿 Plants make birds feel at home

Birds love a little greenery to hide and rest in. Flowering shrubs like Tecoma Yellow and Ixora also draw sunbirds and butterflies with their flowers. Put a couple of pots near your feeders and watch your terrace come alive.

🐦 Who might visit?

Depending on where you live: house sparrows, bulbuls, mynas, munias and sunbirds. Pigeons may come too; small hanging feeders like ours make it easier for the little birds to get their share.
