Decorate Your Home With Plants This Diwali: The Right Plant for Every Corner

The cleaning is done, the rangoli colours are ready, and the lights are going up. But flower garlands wilt in two days. Plants keep your home festive long after Diwali.

Here's the right plant for every corner of your home, plus a few easy ideas to make them part of your Diwali decoration. 🪔🌿

Ixora Dwarf Red Plant
#1 Main entrance

Ixora Dwarf Red: a red welcome at your door

📍 Where: On both sides of the main door, or the steps outside.

Its round bunches of bright red flowers look like a ready-made decoration. Place one pot on each side of the door and every guest gets a festive welcome. It stays compact and loves 4–5 hours of sun.

Gold Crown Snake Plant
#2 Living room

Gold Crown Snake Plant: golden edges for the festive season

📍 Where: Beside the sofa, near the TV unit, or in an empty corner.

Tall, upright leaves with golden borders make it look rich and stylish, perfect for the room where guests sit. It's happy away from the window and needs water only once every 2–3 weeks, so it's fine even during the busy festival days.

Tecoma Yellow Plant
#4 Balcony and terrace

Tecoma Yellow: marigold colour that doesn't wilt

📍 Where: A sunny balcony, terrace or the front of the house.

Bunches of bright yellow, bell-shaped flowers give the same festive feel as marigold garlands, but on a living plant. For a white touch alongside, add Chandni (Tagar), whose white flowers look lovely under evening lights.

Shami Plant
#6 Courtyard and puja corner

Shami: a plant with a place in puja

📍 Where: The courtyard, the terrace, or near the outdoor puja spot.

Shami has a special place in many Indian traditions and is worshipped on festivals. Its fine, feathery leaves look graceful, and it is a tough plant that needs sun and only a little water. Pair it with Tulsi for a complete puja corner.

5 easy Diwali decor ideas with plants

1. Rangoli around the pot. Make a small rangoli on the floor and place a plant in the middle. It instantly becomes the centre of attention.

2. Dress up the nursery pot. Wrap it in jute, a colourful dupatta or a strip of festive cloth, or place it inside an old brass or steel vessel.

3. Make groups of three. One tall, one medium, one small plant together look far better than three pots in a line.

4. Diyas around, not under. Place diyas on the floor around the pots, a little away from the leaves, so the flame never touches the plant.

5. Use LED lights. Small LED string lights stay cool. Drape them loosely over the plant, never tight around the stems.

🧹 After Diwali: a little care

Smoke and ash from firecrackers settle on leaves and block light. A day after Diwali, gently wipe big leaves with a damp cloth or give outdoor plants a light shower. Move indoor plants back to their usual bright spot.
