Fragrant Flowering Plants for Your Home: Mogra, Raat Ki Rani, Parijat and More
Share
Some memories come back with a smell: mogra in Maa's hair, raat ki rani drifting in on a summer night, parijat flowers on the ground in the morning. You can grow that fragrance at home.
Here are 4 fragrant flowering plants that grow well across India, and why right now is a great time to plant them. 🌼
🗓️ Why plant now?
October and November bring mild weather that's neither too hot nor too cold. Plants planted now get the whole winter to grow strong roots, so they are ready to bloom fully when the warm months arrive.

Mogra
🌸 Fragrance: Strong and sweet, mostly in the evening · ☀️ Sun: 4–6 hours
The classic white flower for gajra and puja. It blooms through the warm months, and a single healthy plant on a sunny balcony can give you fresh flowers almost every day in season.

Raat Ki Rani
🌸 Fragrance: Very strong, only at night · ☀️ Sun: 4–6 hours
Its tiny greenish-white flowers look simple by day, but after sunset they fill the whole lane with scent. It grows fast and blooms many times a year. Tip: the smell is strong, so plant it in the courtyard or garden, not right outside a bedroom window.

🌸 Fragrance: Soft and sweet, at night and early morning · ☀️ Sun: Full sun
White flowers with bright orange stems open at night and gently fall by morning. This is its flowering season, and in many homes the fallen flowers are collected for puja. It grows into a small tree, so give it space in a garden or a large pot.

4 tips for more flowers
1. Sun is everything. A flowering plant in shade will stay green but give few flowers. Aim for at least 4 hours of direct sun.
2. Feed every month. Mix a spoon of Vermicompost into the top soil once a month. Many gardeners also add a pinch of Mustard Cake Powder in the warm months.
3. Trim after flowering. Cut back the tips after a round of flowers using clean Secateurs. New branches mean more buds.
4. Water deep, not daily. Water well when the top soil dries, then let it dry again. Soggy soil means fewer flowers.
